How Long Does a PAT Test Last?

A PAT test does not last for a fixed number of months or years in the way many people assume. In reality, a PAT test is a record that an appliance was inspected and, where appropriate, tested and found satisfactory at that point in time. The next inspection or test date should be based on risk, not a universal expiry period. The HSE is clear that electrical equipment must be maintained to prevent danger, and that the type and frequency of checks, inspections and testing depend on the equipment, the environment it is used in, and the results of previous checks.

At SM Electrical, we carry out PAT testing for businesses, landlords and homeowners across Wolverhampton and the wider West Midlands using professional equipment and the latest Code of Practice. Our role is not just to put a sticker on an appliance. It is to help clients understand what needs testing, what level of risk they are dealing with, and how often their appliances should realistically be reviewed.

pat testing

A PAT test is a snapshot, not a guarantee for years ahead

One of the most common misunderstandings around PAT testing is the idea that a pass label means an appliance is guaranteed safe until the printed date on the sticker. That is not how electrical safety works. A PAT test shows the condition of the item on the day it was checked. An appliance can still become unsafe afterwards through wear, damage, misuse, poor storage, or changes in where and how it is used. The HSE’s guidance focuses on ongoing maintenance through user checks, visual inspections and testing where needed, rather than treating PAT as a one-off box-ticking exercise.

So what decides how long a PAT test lasts?

The real answer is that the next test interval depends on risk. Equipment used on a building site, in a workshop, or in a busy shared environment will usually need more frequent attention than equipment sitting undisturbed in a low-risk office. The HSE specifically says that annual portable appliance testing is not always necessary in low-risk environments, and in some cases full portable appliance testing may not be needed for certain low-risk items at all, provided sensible checks and reviews are in place.

In practical terms, the main factors are:

Type of equipment

Portable tools, extension leads, kettles, cleaning equipment and anything moved around regularly usually carry more risk than fixed or low-movement items such as desktop equipment. Items with cables, plugs and moving parts tend to suffer wear more quickly and are more likely to need repeated inspection. The HSE guidance on portable electrical equipment is based around matching maintenance frequency to the nature of the appliance and the likelihood of damage.

Where it is used

Environment matters just as much as the item itself. A printer in a clean office is very different from a pressure washer, vacuum cleaner or power tool used in tougher conditions. Dust, heat, moisture, impact and frequent handling all increase the chance of faults developing between inspections. That is why there is no single legal lifespan for a PAT test result.

Who is using it

Equipment used by trained staff in a controlled setting may need a different inspection regime from equipment used by the public, tenants, cleaners, contractors or multiple staff members across a site. The more people handling an appliance, the greater the chance that damage goes unnoticed unless regular checks are built in.

Previous test results

One of the most important points in the HSE guidance is that past results should shape future intervals. If equipment repeatedly passes and remains in a low-risk environment, the period between tests may be extended. If faults are found regularly, more frequent checks make sense. The HSE even notes that, after reviewing years of results in its own offices, it decided further PAT tests were not needed within the foreseeable future for certain low-risk equipment.

Do PAT certificates expire?

Not in the strict legal sense. A PAT certificate does not have a universal statutory expiry date that applies to every appliance in every setting. What matters is whether the equipment is being maintained appropriately to prevent danger. In other words, the certificate shows what was found on the inspection date, while the employer, landlord or duty holder still needs to decide when the item should next be checked based on risk.

That is why we always advise clients not to rely on a date sticker alone. A formal PAT visit is important, but so are routine visual checks and common-sense reporting of damage in between visits. Cracked plugs, trapped cables, scorch marks, loose connections and broken casings should never wait for the next scheduled test.

What this means for businesses, landlords and homeowners

For many commercial clients, PAT testing is part of a wider health and safety routine. For landlords, it is a sensible way to show that portable appliances supplied with the property are being maintained. For homeowners, it can provide reassurance where there are older appliances, home offices, workshops, or rental arrangements involved. On our PAT testing service page, we explain that we test a wide range of appliances and provide clear reports, labels and certificates so clients have a straightforward record of what has been checked.

We also know that not every property or workplace needs the same approach. A small office, a rental home, a warehouse and a shop will not all have the same testing pattern. That is why we base our recommendations on the type of equipment on site and how it is actually used, rather than forcing every client into the same timetable.

Our view

At SM Electrical, our answer to “how long does a PAT test last?” is simple: it lasts until the condition, use, or risk profile of the equipment means it should be checked again. There is no one-size-fits-all expiry period. A PAT test is part of an ongoing maintenance strategy, not a permanent safety guarantee. We carry out fast, reliable PAT testing across the West Midlands and follow the latest Code of Practice so our clients get advice that is practical as well as compliant.

Final thoughts

The best way to think about PAT testing is not “How long is this valid for?” but “When should this appliance next be reviewed to keep people safe?” That shift in thinking is much closer to the HSE’s approach and far more useful in real life. Low-risk equipment may go much longer between formal tests, while higher-risk appliances may need more frequent inspection and testing. The right answer always comes back to risk, usage and environment.

At SM Electrical, we help clients make that judgement properly, with clear reporting and straightforward advice backed by more than 20 years of experience across domestic and commercial electrical work.
